Chapter Three

Matchim woke early, and the first thing he did was look to the old clock radio to check the time, but it was obvious that it wasn’t reading the time correctly since it definitely wasn’t six in the evening.

It sat next to the bed on the worn nightstand that had obviously seen better days. He sat up and scooted out of bed. What he wouldn’t have given at that exact moment for a large coffee and a breakfast sandwich from the café that was located just down the street from him and Brian back in their neighbourhood. If he remembered correctly, it was Sunday.

Routine, he’d always relished it in his life once he’d settled down and moved in with Brian. On Sundays, he would always rise early and leave Brian sleeping while he walked to the café for their breakfast. When he returned they’d sit in bed and eat, enjoying their time together before the work week started up the following day.

His gaze fell onto the small coffeemaker in the room. It was the usual standard mini brew often found in motels. He walked to it, and much to his chagrin there wasn’t any coffee. If there had been, he guessed that Nick might have already used it.

He sat in a chair and watched a sleeping Nick who was snoring softly with one hand hanging down over the side of the mattress. He was so thankful for Nick. Last night had thrown him for a loop, yet the way Nick had shown respect for him and his relationship was astounding.

“Hey you.” Nick opened his eyes and yawned as he stretched. “I’ll take a medium coffee, three cream, and two sugar to go please and thanks.”

Matchim raised one brow. “Funny, but I’d kill for a coffee right now. However, it isn’t worth it given what I’d have to go through to get to the nearest place stocking it.”

“There’s a coffee shop right down the street.” Nick smirked. “Less than a five minute walk. And a machine in the motel lobby. I’ll wait for you here. But give me a minute to write down what I want before you head out.”

Matchim watched as Nick got out of bed and walked over to one window to peer through the heavy curtains. “Most of them left overnight,” he said. “We can’t stay here. We need to move on to get farther away from the city. That’s always been my plan.

He agreed, but the thought of going back out there terrified him. Where would they go, and what would they do if they got attacked again? “You’re right. We need food. I don’t have much stashed.”

Nick turned away from the window. “It’s early. We could leave today. The roads are plugged with abandoned cars, so it’s best we continue on by foot. If we stay away from them and watch ourselves we should be okay. Once we get to the highway it’ll be better.”

“There’s still the suburbs. Tons of people lived there packed in pretty tight.
